The 1990 view of Nashville’s skyline portrays an exciting and progressive city…and a storehouse for various architectural representations.

At the left is the picturesque Capitol building of Tennessee. Utilizing Greek Revival design, it is situated on the highest point in the downtown area. Nearby is the most prominent building…a distinction that belongs to the American General Center. In its shadow is the acclaimed Tennessee Performing Arts Center which qualifies as an example of unique construction. Across the street from TPAC is Nashville City Center, the newest high-rise office complex of the business district. It is pictured  behind the Hyatt Hotel.

Other mid-city structures of renown are Third National Bank building (with its Egyptian influence), the Life & Casualty Tower (the first Nashville skyscraper) and Dominion Tower (initially called One Nashville Place). The Stouffer Hotel, which rises above the Nashville Convention Center, is partially hidden behind the 1990 addition to the Baptist Sunday School Board complex. The now familiar “Ponder Pigeon” stands atop this new territory.

The grouping of structures at the right contains spires belonging to First Baptist Church, Customs House and Union Station (completed 1900 in Romanesque style). These towers represent an interesting assortment of church, government and transporation concepts.

In the middle foreground is the headquarters for Nashville Electric Service…standing at the corner of Church Street (a prominent route into midtown) and 13th Avenue (which parallels Interstate 265). The other primary thoroughfares shown are Charlotte to the left and Broadway on the right.
