Cheeckwood, once the private home and estate of the Cheek family, is now a beautiful 55-acre property in Southwest Nashville, providing visitors with a unique experience of art and gardens.
The former Cheek mansion, as pictured in this 2000 lithograph, is built of limestone quarried from the property. The style and details of the sturcture are in Neo-Georgian design, based upon eighteenth century British architecture. Many of the elements of the building were secured in Europe and shipped to Nashville. The 36-room mansion was completed and occupied by the family in 1933. It was eventually transformed to its current purpose and opened to the public in 1960.
Several recent extensive renovations have produced a greatly improved museum of art, beautiful botanical gardens and a multi-faceted learning center.
