Nashville's new modern classical library buidling, designed by architect Robert AM Stern, opened to the public in June, 2001. Clad in cut limestone, granite, and brick, the exterior of the building reflects and expands upon the classical themes found in much of Nashville's pemanent architecture. Interior design reflects classical motifs from around the world, including the use of marble floorings, wrought metalwork, arched doorways, pediments, and vaulted ceilings.
Many special touches were added to reflect the Tennessee environment. A careful look reveals native plants and animals used as design motifs in many areas of the library. The central outdoor courtyard, based on an Italian piazza with formal gardens and fountain, affords pleasure to readers within the confines of the building. The creative talents of artists from Nashville and around the world enhance the facility and delight the senses. The architectural principles of classical and Beaux Art styles bring strong library design traditions forward into the future.
