The Croft House is located on what was a 300-acre Nashville farm called Grassmere. Five generations of the same family lived in this antebellum home and worked its fertile land for over 150 years.

The original portions of the house were built in 1811 utilizing a Tennessee vernacular style. It was remodeled around 1880 with unique Victorian elements added and a latticed gazebo (on left) placed over the cistern.

The last generation descendants, Margaret and Elise Croft, deeded the land and home to be used specifically for recreation and creative learning about nature, history and enviornment. Grassmere Wildlife Park was opened in 1990 featuring the wildlife and nature of Tennessee. Due to financial instability, the park temporarily closed in 1994 and the city of Nashville took control. In October 1996, the Nasvhille Zoo was granted a contract to move to the remaining zoo areas of Grassmere. As part of the agreement, the city was to renovate the house to its original 1800's appearance. It will be an education center and available for tours, meetings and special events.

The home is on the National Register of Historic Places.
