Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, and his wife Rachel moved into The Hermitage in 1818. Located on then vast land holdings east of Nashville, the home is still recognized as one of American's most famous residences.

The Hermitage is basically an example of Early Victorian architecture but does incorporate certain aspects of Greek Revival and Colonial/Georgian features. The structure was built of red bricks, which were painted white after a fire blackened the columned front porch area. The wings were added in 1831.

Extensive restoration work on the historic home was completed in 2010. The visitor center was added in early 1989. The Ladies Hermitage Association oversees and maintains the operation of the mansion and grounds as a favorite Tennessee attraction.

Above the mansion is depicted a likeness of identical sculptures of Andrew Jackson that are public art attractions in Nashville, New Orleans and Washington DC.
