This 1990 lithograph of Market Street pictures all twenty structures on the eastern side of Second Avenue North between Broadway and Church Streets. This block was the center of Nashville's market district, especially active in the late 1800's and early 1900's. For a lenghty period it was "quiet"...but today it is again a very busy commerce, office and entertainment sector, thanks to extensive revitalization programs in the 1980's.
The buildings, all prominently listed in the National Register of Historic Districts, preserve the Victorian architecture that was popular when they were built, mostly in the last century. Their brick faces and shells and their internal structural features remain the same, but changing occupants have altered colors, interior decor and types of businesses being conducted.
This block, with its appealing atmosphere, is a pleasure to visit in Nashville during the day or evening.
