The Captiol building for Tennessee is located on the most prominent hill in downtown Nashville. It is 239 feet by 109 feet and features Ionic columns at each end and on the central porticos.
William F. Strickland, the architect, received much acclaim for this Greek Revival design. His employment by the state and construction on the Capitol both began in 1845. The legislature moved in during 1853, but six more years elapsed before completion.
Shown in this 1989 print is the eastern end of the rectangular structure with the statue of Edward Carmack in a prominent position above the lower entrance hall. The Legislative Plaza, with open area, trees and fountains, is in the foreground.
