Police & Fire Department 1918
Digitally restored photo printed on metal, 58" wide x 12" high, ready to hang.
The law enforcement and judicial system at Old Hickory in 1918 was structured to work in coordination with the Davidson County judicial system. Fifty of the DuPont guards were deputized by the sheriff of Davidson County, and Squire S.R. Johnson maintained a county magistrate court in the village. The police force consisted of 150-200 men, all drilled like soldiers. Provided with a salary of $82/month and housing, their duty was to maintain both security and order at the plant and in the village. Mounted patrols prohibited intruders.
When DuPont returned in 1923, they once again had their own guard force and fire department separate from Davidson County. These services were eventually turned over to the newly formed Old Hickory Utility District when DuPont sold the Village properties (1951). The OH Utility District transferred control to the county in 1962.
As a side note, during the DuPont era, most children were afraid to get into trouble in the community and/or school. Doing so meant notifying your parents while on the job.
