January 29, 1918 – DuPont signed a contract with the United States government for the construction of a smokeless gunpowder facility with a daily capacity of 500,000 pounds, housing for employees, and necessary railroad, roadway, and river transport.... all in Old Hickory. It’s important to note that this was one of five major contracts the government entered into with DuPont for World War 1. This one was considered one of the largest.

March 3, 1918 – Ground was broken in Old Hickory.

March 23, 1918 – DuPont signed a new contract with the United States to increase capacity and cost of construction/production to 900,000 pounds making Old Hickory's site the largest smokeless gunpowder facility in the world. The first gunpowder was produced on July.
