Miranda Herrick

Miranda Herrick was born in Vicenza, Italy in the 1970′s, an ARMY brat.  After returning to the US, she attended eight different schools in four states before her father’s retirement settled her family in Clarksville, TN in the early 1990′s.

She started drawing for art’s sake around the age of four.  After being restored by her mother’s reassurances from an existential crisis at the age eight, Miranda has spent all of her spare time with a pen in hand.

Miranda received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Austin Peay State University in the fall of 1999. Her studies concentrated on ceramics and drawing.  Since that time she has pursued a career in the picture framing industry and the fine art field while also indulging an interest in curating and displaying art objects.

A recent project of Miranda’s consisted of 365 drawings, one for each day of a year.  This series of drawings is titled ‘Works and Days’ after a poem by the Greek poet Hesiod which mentions the necessity and virtue of effort.

Although a few of the designs create organically shaped images, most are more structured geometric patterns.  These drawings began with penciled grid lines and grew out with repetitive, pen-and-ink line work done freehand.  The process is meditative in nature.

The purpose of making a drawing on every day of a year was two-fold.  Firstly, it demanded structure and discipline for the practice of meditation in action.  Secondly, it was a way to interact with the audience’s personal history.  Seeing the dates on the finished pieces calls to mind for a viewer any personal significance of that day.

Through her work, Miranda is interested in exploring ideas about altruism, living green, human interaction, and human effort.
